Marijauna Legalized in Nevada? |
 |
Marijuana may be soon legalized in Nevada where a new law will be proposed.
Surprisingly, this ultra-radical (or, according to its supporters, ultra-rational) proposal is supported by the state's largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the state's largest law-enforcement organization, the Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs.

FDA Okays Marijuana Hair Test |
 |
Drug-testing giant Psychemedics has won approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for a new test that detects the presence of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, in human hair. According to Psychemedics, the hair test allows for the detetection of drugs used as long as THREE MONTHS to the time of testing. The company also touts the ability to keep the suspect, er, employee or student, under surveillance while the sample is taken -- a problem for urine drug testers who encounter people who dislike being watched while they go to the bathroom.

Scotland's first cannabis cafe set to open |
 |
SCOTLAND'S first cannabis cafe could be open for business next month, one of the owners of the controversial enterprise told The Herald last night.
Kevin Williamson, founder of the Rebel Inc publishing firm, posted details of the new Rebel Inc Coffeeshop planned for "the heart of Edinburgh" on his website yesterday afternoon.
On it, he describes how the members-only establishment will eventually sell cannabis direct to customers as a means of cutting out the adulterated supplies in the city's deprived areas.

Marijuana Politics Hits French Presidential Race |
 |
With French presidential elections looming in May, the politics of cannabis has made its way into the campaign. Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin on Tuesday caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth among French conservatives when he remarked that smoking a joint at home was less dangerous than drinking and driving. The rightists' ire was not lessened despite the fact that Jospin quickly added that he would oppose any change in French cannabis laws, which, on paper at least, are among the most draconian in Europe.

The DEA Must Go Away |
 |
While the nation's 18,000 law enforcement agencies went on high anti-terrorist alert Tuesday, the DEA in San Francisco had better things to do. In predawn raids across the Bay Area, DEA agents hit the 6th Street Harm Reduction Center, the home and offices of long-time High Times and Cannabis Culture cultivation columnist Ed Rosenthal, and properties where suspected medical marijuana grow ops were allegedly taking place. By the time DEA administrator Asa Hutchinson arrived at the downtown Commonwealth Club for a speech that evening, he was greeted by several hundred angry demonstrators, including several members of the city's Board of Supervisors as well as San Francisco's District Attorney, demanding that the raids cease and chanting "DEA Go Away!" Hutchinson fared no better inside, where his speech about the war on drugs was greeted with heckling, boos and cat-calls.
